Come in a waistcoat and watch...or don't come at all!

I love vintage fashion. I love box sets. And nothing is more glorious than when the two shall  meet! Here are a few of my favourite shows that not only have incredible, absorbing storylines but showcase some of the most gorgeous and inspiring retro fashions. Today we focus on the boys!
A show (and central character) that I just cannot get enough of is Peaky Blinders, with Cillian Murphy as the captivating Tommy Shelby. This BBC drama is now 3 series in. It follows the Shelby family and their less than legit efforts to be the top family in Birmingham (and London, and increasingly, the world!) and despite their rather brutal approach to seize power, you can't help but root for them.
Cillian Murphy's powerful portrayal of the head of the Shelby family  is mesmerizing - every single moment is acted with such intensity. Series one is set just after the first World War, and the male members of the Shelby family dress in close-cut tweed suits, flat caps and long overcoats.

The business of these men may be brutal, but you can't say they don't conduct it in style! The series has enough twists and turns to keep you interested and the beautiful cinematography alone is enough to hold your attention. The characters are well rounded; believable -  likeable and worthy of distain in equal measure.
Series 2 saw the introduction of the irrefutably brilliant Tom Hardy as a rival gang member who Tommy tries to woo in a bid to expand his empire to London. His portrayal of the plain speaking Alfie Solomons is both terrifying and gorgeously funny.

Ripper Street, set in Victorian England and loosely based on the detective in charge of the Jack the Ripper Case, is a BBC series which aired for two seasons, then, when it was not commissioned for a third, was picked up by Amazon Prime  - praise be! Matthew Macfadden, who plays DI Edmund Reid, is joined by fellow officer Bennet Drake, played by Jerome Flynn, (who you may know as Bronn in Game of Thrones) and the gorgeous Adam Rothernberg, as the loveable America rogue Captain Homer Jackson.

I love this show! The character development and attention to detail is perhaps not quite as on point as Peaky Blinders, but I would happily watch each episode again and again! The relationships between the three central characters is played out in an amusing and sometimes touching way, and, like Peaky Blinders, there are plenty of waistcoats and pocket watches to keep my vintage fashion soul sated!
When Sherlock hit our screens in 2010 I was enthralled, and not simply because it brought the gentleman who goes by the name of Cumberbatch into my life! The show's witty and intelligent script and phenomenal performances by Benedict as Holmes and Marin Freeman as Watson are simply a joy to behold! It is of course set in modern day, but in one episode called 'The Abominable Bride', which takes place in Holmes' imagination, the team find themselves back in the 1890s meaning Holmes is reunited with the famous deerstalker hat and pipe! But even in the modern day episodes, a vintage feel is still maintained particularly though the décor and styling of Holmes' apartment. And really, what ever era Cumberbatch is in, is fine by me...I mean, I still get to see his face...and sometimes a little more...!

Lace me Up!

Corsetry is something that has always fascinated me. As an lifestyle 'concept' I am pretty against it, seeing as how it can damage the body; I have watched videos of people who practise tight-lacing and waist training and, whilst captivating, it is somewhat disturbing. Tight-lacing can actually cause muscular atrophy; the stomach muscles can become weakened and the body becomes reliant on the corset for support.

Aesthetically I can see the appeal of corsetry, and if the corset in question is not being worn all day every day, but more as a fashion item for a few hours, I think it can create a very striking look.

In the past, corsets would have been worn as underwear, tightly and painfully laced to create the hourglass figure. But these days I think they are more associated with Burlesque and performance. Something a little bit 'other' and slightly taboo, without being too risqué.

I am a huge Camille O'Sullivan fan, and she is well known for the dramatic vintage look she adopts on stage. A corset is, in my mind, undoubtedly sensual, and it nods towards the exciting and illicit, because even though all aspects of society, including the upper classes, would have worn them in the past, now it conjures up images of the Moulin Rouge.

Perhaps the most famous modern day advocator of the look is Burlesque queen, and Marilyn Manson's ex, Dita Von Teese. Here she is in a gorgeous floral number, looking a bit like a sexy hanging basket, and here again, as the sexiest Koi fish you've ever seen!

Colour me Happy!

If colour is what you crave to really get the party started at your wedding then take a bit of inspiration from today's post.

I'll keep the words brief today and let the pictures speak for themselves! Enjoy.

A Fairy-Tale Beginning

As winter continues to embrace us in its frosty cuddle, let's get all indulgent and romantic with a bouquet of dreamy dresses! Sit back, sip your coco and swoon at these ethereal beauties!

What an exquisite little creature! I love the combination of fabrics and colours on this beautiful gown. You'd feel like something straight out of A Midsummer Night's Dream in this one.

I think this soft peachy colour is such a sweet alternative to ivory and the way it peeps through the lace overlay, creates a dress with body and volume that is still a million miles away from being overly frou-frou!

This beautiful dress offers as much fairytale charm as the others, in perhaps a simpler way and for those not wanting so much flesh on show, the lacy top is perfect.

I love the sensual shape of this gown, and if it's sparkle and detail you are after, this has tem in intricate abundance. It brings to mind the shape and feel of art nouveau sculpture and would bring sophistication and grace to the big day.
The petal-shaped bell sleeves of this wedding dress are so lovely and you would look like a maiden straight out of a Pre-Raphaelite painitng in this one!

The tiered layers at the bottom of this gorgeous nouveau style gown give it a softness which neatly balances the heavier structuring at the top and the vertical line detailing add a touch of that flapper girl fun and glamour.

The sweep of this skirt is ultra romantic and I love the colours. You couldn't help but feel like the fairy-tale bride in this one!
